A quote that comes back fast, with no follow-up questions, is usually a red flag rather than good news. Tooling quotes that hold up are built on a specific set of design-for-manufacturability, or DFM, questions — and if your factory isn’t asking them, you’re likely to find out the hard way once the tool is already cut. This is the same conversation we have with clients on injection molded plastics and hardgoods project before tooling starts.
What’s this part actually made of, and why
Material choice drives almost everything downstream: wall thickness, draft angles, cooling time, cost per unit. A factory doing real DFM work will push back on material choices that look fine on a spec sheet but behave badly in a mold — for instance, a resin that’s technically strong enough but shrinks unevenly as it cools, warping a part that looked perfect in CAD.
Where are the walls too thin, or too thick
Uniform wall thickness is one of the most common things first-time product designers get wrong, because it’s invisible until it isn’t. Thick sections cool slower than thin ones, which creates sink marks, warping, and inconsistent strength. A factory worth working with will flag these before tooling, not after the first pilot run comes out warped.
How does this part actually come out of the mold
Draft angles — the slight taper that lets a part release cleanly from a mold — get skipped constantly in early designs because they’re easy to forget when you’re focused on how the product looks and functions. Without them, parts stick, get damaged on ejection, or need a mold repair mid-production. This is a five-minute conversation before tooling and a costly one after.
What tolerances actually matter to you
Not every dimension on a part needs to be held to a tight tolerance, and pretending otherwise drives up tooling cost for no functional reason. Good DFM conversations separate “this needs to be precise because it mates with another part” from “this was just drawn at a round number in CAD.” Knowing the difference is often the single biggest lever on final unit cost.
